Core Curriculum

The JLSD Board Academy is a multi-session program held annually, typically in the spring, featuring expert-led training on key aspects of effective nonprofit board service. The curriculum is designed to provide both foundational knowledge and advanced strategies. Past sessions have included key focus areas serving the following program components:

Program Component	Key Focus Areas
Board 101 & Board Service	An introductory panel discussion providing an overview of what board service entails and the expected commitment.
Duties and Responsibilities	In-depth training on governance, board policies, standard procedures, fiduciary (financial) duties, and integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles.
Fundraising	Essential strategies and best practices for board members in leading and supporting development and philanthropic initiatives.
Strategic Planning	Understanding the board’s role in setting the organization’s vision, long-term goals, and strategic direction.
Board Panel & Networking	A culminating session featuring a discussion with experienced board members, followed by an opportunity to expand your professional network.
